Albion Eco was pleased to attend The Drinking Water Inspectorate’s (DWI) launch of the ‘Drinking Water 2023 – The Chief Inspector’s report for drinking water in Wales’ in Cardiff on 16 July 2024. The report details the key water quality issues in Wales during 2023 including water quality testing, compliance with standards, compliance failures and water quality events, Security and Emergencies (SEMD), as well as an overview of the work carried out by the DWI (there is a separate report for England).
We have maintained our exemplary record of water quality with no compliance failures and no events in 2023, and as a whole the water companies in Wales achieved a 99.96% level of compliance for the year. In 2022 the UK was in the 10 countries listed in Yale University’s Environmental Performance Index with an index of 100 (the highest possible) when measuring safe drinking water. Marcus Rink, the Chief Inspector of Drinking Water, gave a thorough overview of the report’s contents and the challenges facing water quality and supply in Wales. He set out the 2 main areas the DWI are asking water companies in Wales to focus on in coming years; discolouration and the state of the fixed assets (water treatment works tanks and service reservoirs).
